Simple. The bible is a collection of metaphors designed to guide/coerce Iron Age people into being civilized.

Today, considering the bible as factual is a common, tragic error that leads many modern people to endure increasingly hysterical and confused lives as they experience the real world, which does not mesh well with the bible’s Iron Age mythical stories.

Summed up: too many people still believe in Santa Claus.
