As society has become more complex, a larger percentage of people do need extra help, to prevent chaos at the bottom. It keeps everyone closer to being part of progress.
Progress is the key primary engine of The United States.
The U.S. was founded on hugely progressive Enlightenment principals, resulting in the creation of the most potent human society in history.
This progress can be seen as two things: liberty and education.
Liberated people have the opportunity to excel at their natural talents.
An educated person possesses the accumulated sum of human knowledge.
By your use of the word, this country was founded by a big gang of “elitists”. Have you ever read the actual writings of the founders?

But he also wrote:

We are still learning what it means to be human.
Consider how recently women were given equal rights, and how some women in other societies remain slaves.
It’s simple: VOTE FOR PROGRESS, as progress has forever been the only solution.
You may not like everything about Obama, but you know he represents tremendous progress, and his presidency will help our great country regain its elitist place in history.
